Down at the Plant

Every person at the plant was wondering what the upcoming meeting was going to be about.

Some suspected a big layoff as the work that was coming in was sparse and the fact that all overtime had been suspended for the last month had them worried.

The managers and supervisors were all in the dark too and were being asked by several people what was going on and all they’d say was everyone would find out at the meeting after lunch.

Gathered all together anticipating the worst the employees sat in silence waiting for the CEO to begin.

“Hello everyone, I know you’re all wondering why I called this meeting today and for what purpose.”

“First, off next month we’re getting in a big contract to process and we’ll be needing all hands on deck and I want you all to be prepared for overtime hours and if you had vacation time booked, it is now canceled.”

  1. Having been in work situations like this where everyone was dreading anticipated bad news, it comes as such a relief to find out you really didn’t have a clue. But then, as with all staff everywhere, the grumbling about overtime was soon to ensue. Gratitude is often short-lived, but at least it means paychecks will be in the bank. I’ve known times when they weren’t. Good story!

  2. Engaging SSS. You had me going, preparing for the worst! But what a pleasant ending! I agree with Clark. Your story really “grabs” the reader.

  3. Excellent job grabbing us (the readers) and maintaining the suspense.
Plus it was a positive ending.*

    * Not that positive is inherently superior to negative endings in stories, at least imho, its just better, especially when the subject matter is so down-to-earth.

  5. Like the turnaround. Like the message. When all looks glum … don’t give up, for who can see tomorrow?
